The upgrade that isn't
While the kids are out of town and I'm allowed to have a thought for more than 3 minutes at a time, I figured I'd update my blog software and try to master scheduled posts. Sure, I've done nothing more technical than reboot my machines in the last two years, but how hard can it be?
It took me several hours just to figure out how to do a backup, and in the end I sort of cheated and just copied everything to my desktop. I was nearly giddy when I figured out why the DB backup was freezing up my machine, and I finally got it to work.
Then I started the upgrade/install. I mucked something up but good, and rather than try to figure the whole mess out, I just deleted the whole mess of files and copied the whole thing back from my hard drive. Luckily everything seems to have recovered.
Back to the upgrade/install. I finally figured out what the instructions wanted from me, and I think I put everything where it belongs. The Configuration Wizard even came up! Success! No, wait, when I start the Wizard, I get a server error. The same error I've been working around for several years when I post (and which seems to occur only randomly, making it hard to diagnose).
The good news is, the blog is still readable, and the recovery has restored my ability to add posts.
The bad news is, nothing has been upgraded, and I'm sort of stuck on what to try next.
I'll keep muddling through, because that seems to eventually work, but right now I have to take a break to get some other work done on this machine.
