On the road again

I've had a hard time coming up with anything to write this week. Which is odd, since we aren't doing anything more or less exciting than usual around here.

On Saturday, Jamie turns 4. Four! I already can barely remember her as a baby. Sometimes, I go back and look at pictures of her from a couple years ago, and she looks familiar, but I can't remember her at two. Everyone says it, but it's amazingly true. The days last forever, but the years go so fast.

Saturday, we'll be driving down to Houston for Jamie's party. This will be Jamie's first birthday party with actual kids attending, instead of just family. I was upset when we moved up here that once again, Jamie wouldn't have any friends attending. I'm sure she's thrilled with cake, no matter who is there to share it, but I'm starting to feel like Worst Mother in the World for not being able to give her what *I* think is a proper party.

Sunday, we return to Dallas, and then Monday morning, the girls and I are off to Maryland for a week. I'll be back Tuesday, and Wednesday, Rex and I head to Cozumel for a couple days.

In other words, don't expect to hear much outta me in the next two weeks :)

DST

For the first time in 4 years, the time change has done me good.

Every other jump, forward or back, has wreaked havok on either the girl's sleep schedule or mine. It appeared this one was going to wreck me, too, as the girls got up half an hour before their unadjusted usual wake-up. I have no idea how they knew that Sunday was the day to screw with me, but it never fails.

But then on Monday Katie slept past 7:30, Jamie until 8. Tuesday, they didn't get up until 8:10! And even today, Jamie was up at 7:30, Katie 8:10. Oh, and Jamie even napped yesterday. Katie's naps, on the other hand, have taken a beating. Always a trade-off, I guess.

Now someone kill the damn bird that shoots his mouth off outside our window at 7am!

It worked!

After weeks of procrastination, lots of confusion and a lot of stupid and ignorant mistakes, Movable Type has been upgraded. It was stupidly simple, in the end.

I still haven't figured out how to authenticate commenters, and the banner graphic is still fucked, but I'll have to look into that later. Right now, I have to take a picture of the beautiful pear tree flower off our balcony and then shove the kids out the door for Tae Kwon Do.

Hanes tagless T

So I bought a couple T-shirts at WalMart the other day, just after learning how white and gelatinous I look in a swimsuit. They were fitted T's from Hanes, with the printed tag in the back. I tried on a medium and a large, and decided on the smaller. It was roomy enough that even with a little shrinking, it should have still fit without being snug.

I washed both shirts, put on the black one, and discovered that instead of a tag in the neck, where I'm used to an irritant, they printed the tag into the neck and put the itchiest tag known to man in the side. I carefully tried to tear the tag out, and got most of it. There was still a small piece stuck in the seam that itched, but less. Plus, we were in a hurry, so I figured I'd cut the rest out another time. Oh, and it had shrunk so much that it was quite snug over the chest and shoulders, and smaller than I had wanted everywhere else, but not quite indecent.

When we got where we were going, I put my hand to my side to scratch and my fingers went right through the seam. Careful as I was, I must have torn some threads trying to get that tag out of my damn tagless shirt.

I left the tag in the second shirt, cutting off the corners of the it. Unfortunately, I couldn't do much for the fact that it's a thin white shirt that fits snugly, which *did* make it slightly indecent.

I've emailed my complaints to the company. If I don't get any response, I'll call and make my complaints a little more in person.

Comments, and I still haven't upgraded

I've been really bad about replying to comments here, for a couple reasons. First of all, I have to comment on my own blog the same way you do. Supposedly, you can register commenters, but I have yet to figure out how. Second, while my internet connection is mediocre, my connection to my blog is pathetic. I don't know exactly why, sometimes are better than others, and it runs on a server with a lot of my other stuff that runs fine, so I'm confuzzled. Third, I suck. Oh, and fourth, I get the comments in email, and then have to approve them before they post. I was actually sorting out the spam, but totally forgetting to approve the real comments. Duh!

I still haven't done the upgrade I planned for a month or so ago. Now, it's been so long that I have to redo my backups, which means I have to figure out how to *do* the backups again. Mommy brain sucks. I have hopes that the significantly newer version will improve commenting, well, significantly.

And in case you haven't noticed, I'm not just bad about comments on my own blog, I'm not very good at commenting on others sites, either. Some of it has to do with not having anything useful to add, some shyness, and some timing. It's much easier to get blogs read than to manage to actually type out a coherent response.

At least I'm consistent, right?

Now I get it.

I was all set to write this post about my issues with my Hanes tagless shirt, but first I have to ask: Should I really have to tell my daughter more than once not to like the walls of her bedroom?

Seriously, this is the four year old I'm talking about. Jamie takes a rest every day, about 30 minutes where she is supposed to be lying in bed, "resting," and then another hour that she can read, play with the toys that are in there, or play her Leapster, which I take to her when I tell her she can get out of bed.

Yesterday, she was jumping on her bed and messing with the dresser drawers when I went in there. I made sure to remind her, very clearly, that she is supposed to be quiet, calm, and in bed til I open the door when I put her down today. And she was a gem, until I walked in and saw the big wet spot on the wall about three feet over her pillow.

And this was not the first time.

I used to wonder how kids managed to get lead poisoning from paint.

Next week, she'll be joyriding in my minivan

Katie spent about 20 minutes this morning throwing fits and sending herself to her room, shutting (sometimes slamming!) the door behind her.

It was actually kind of funny the first time I saw her do it. When she recovered and came back into the living room, I asked her to put her milk away. That's when she screamed "NO!", said "Me room" and took off. I caught up with her just before the door shut, and then we actually had a little battle over the closing of the door. I won, mostly because I outweigh her by about 120 pounds. I carried her out screaming, handing her milk, and then followed her screaming, snotty little self to the fridge.

This is about the same age that Jamie went to the dark side. I obviously didn't handle it right back then, since we still have major problems with crying fits and running off to her room to avoid rebuke. (I actually know where that came from. I didn't look far enough ahead when I was disciplining her.) I may not do it right this time, but I'm at least going to try to make different mistakes!

I might have to try them in a batch of cookie dough, just to be sure

We picked up some free range, never been in a cage, grain fed, happy hippie hen eggs today. They were almost a buck more per 18 than regular eggs, which I'm assuming covers the cost of painting them brown.

Really, I got them because some friends have said that they taste better, that they look better because the yolks are more yellow(?), and uh, they taste better?

So tonight, we had scrambled eggs so we could really check out that eggy flava. Sadly, aside from the shell color and the size of a few of the eggs (free range chickens must have some incredible birthing hips!) I really didn't taste any difference. I even tasted them raw (shut up! I like it!) and couldn't tell.

Needless to say, I won't bother spending the extra change on them again. I'll save it for the free-range chicken broth!

Yeah, I thought so.

Is it bad that Katie already points excitedly and yells "McDonalds! McDonalds!" every time we pass one?

When did she become a teenager?

Katie was messing around in the laundry room.

"What are you doing in there?"

"Nothing, Mama. Bye-bye!"

Then she closed the door.

Spring!

And white. Pale, pale white.

A week ago, maybe less, Rex started doing a little exercise at night. He lets Jamie choose how many push-ups, sit-ups, and jumping jacks she wants him to do, and then the girls "help" by sitting on his feet.

Yesterday, I decided I really need to move a little, so I joined in.

Ow.

Let me say that again.

Ow.

I barely made it through 10 sit-ups. I used to be able to do an almost unlimited number. Then I thought about it and realized I haven't done a sit-up since before I got pregnant with Jamie. Then I did 10 push-ups. I've never been good at push-ups, so I wasn't surprised by how much they hurt.

I was pretty sure I was going to be sore today, so I was pleasantly surprised to find the only pain I had was in my sinuses. Stupid cold. I was fine all day. Did some more sit-ups, no problem (ha!) Did my push-ups and HOLY HELL SOMEONE SET MY CHEST MUSCLES ON FIRE!

Maybe flabby and out of breath isn't so bad after all?
